Cypress Softball Overpowers Saddleback, 9-0

It was only fitting that a double by Cypress’ Aimee Weathers drove in two runs in the fifth inning to give the Chargers a 9-0, mercy-rule victory over Saddleback in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Friday at Cypress.

It was, after all, the fifth double and 14th hit of the game for first-place Cypress (33-12-1, 11-3), which was coming off a 2-0 loss to Fullerton Wednesday.

Fullerton beat Riverside, 2-0, also Friday, to remain tied with Cypress for first.

Lise Delligatta had two doubles and a single, scored twice, and drove in three for Cypress. Delligatta had a two-run double that gave the Chargers a 6-0 lead in the second.

Christa Saindon had a double, two singles, scored three runs and drove in another. Christina Megowan also had an RBI double and walked with the bases loaded for Cypress.

“I don’t understand why we hit so well today and couldn’t hit Wednesday,” Cypress Coach Brad Pickler said. “The wind was blowing out but we were hitting line drives so it didn’t really help.”

Shana Rizzo pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks to improve to 15-6.

Christy Journell started the game with a double and also had a third-inning single for Saddleback (25-8, 10-4), which dropped a game behind Cypress.
