Long Beach Tops UCLA in Men’s Volleyball

Long Beach State defeated UCLA, 15-10, 15-10, 15-13, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Friday at Long Beach.

Tom Hoff had 27 kills and Martin Wagner added 23 for the 49ers (21-4, 15-3 in conference). Setter Steve Walker had 61 assists, and Neil Mendel had nine kills, five blocks and 10 digs.

Fred Robins had 14 kills and Paul Nihipali added six for the Bruins (20-5, 14-4).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

South Alabama 5, UC Irvine 2--Steve Talakson defeated Nic Chisholm, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, and Thomas Bohan defeated Maruis Stewart, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, in singles for Irvine (12-8).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s tennis:

Southern California College 9, Biola 0--Star Connolly swept her sets at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1, then teamed with Amy Tate to sweep No. 3 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, for SCC (10-5).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Cal State Northridge 2--Nina Basica and Patti Villaroman won their singles and doubles matches for Irvine (7-12).
