New Sign Ordinance Being Modified
Tonight the City Council will look at how the sign ordinance it approved last month will affect churches, schools and the business community.
The city staff has been meeting with churches and school representatives, along with members of the business community, to refine the ordinance.
Under an amendment before the council, churches that hold services in facilities like schools will be put in a category allowing them to post temporary directional signs. Those churches won’t be required to obtain a sign permit, but will have to observe size limits and can’t post signs more than 24 hours before services.
The council will also decide whether church signs can be posted on the public right of way.
Other changes will affect:
* Off-site school fund-raising signs.
* Commercial real estate signs.
* Apartment flags.
* Holiday decorations for commercial centers.
