Valleywide : Test Offers Chance at High School Diploma

People wishing to complete their high school education via the state’s proficiency test have two weeks to register for next month’s exam, the California Department of Education has announced.

Locally, the three-hour California High School Proficiency Examination will be given on May 11 at El Camino Real High School, 5440 Valley Circle Blvd. in Woodland Hills, and Glendale Community College, 1500 N. Verdugo Road in Glendale.

Registration forms are available at all California public high schools and libraries in the CHSPE Information Bulletin, a booklet that also contains sample questions and a complete list of test sites throughout the state. The cost is $47 and the form must be received by May 1.

The state Board of Education awards a Certificate of Proficiency to those who pass the test, the legal equivalent of a high school diploma.

The exam is open to anyone 16 or older and school enrollment is not required. Children younger than 16 who have completed the 10th grade or are enrolled in the second semester of 10th grade are also eligible. For more information, call (916) 657-2277.
