Plans to build a park on a 9.7-acre site that includes a 100-year-old redwood grove and about 350 cedar trees won final approval from the City Council this week.

The Tustin Ranch Tree Park will be on Pioneer Road in an undeveloped parcel in east Tustin.

Improvements--which will include regional trail access, restrooms, picnic and play areas, playground equipment, lighted parking lots, landscaping and a basketball court--are expected to cost about $1.4 million .

Officials said the money will come from the city’s park development fund, which now has about $2.1 million in federal Community Development Block Grants.

Construction at the nature park is scheduled to begin in September and expected to take about nine months, said Christine Shingleton, assistant city manager.
