A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy accidentally shot himself Wednesday at the sheriff’s pistol range in Camarillo, authorities said.

Deputy Jeffery Moore, 27, of Valencia was returning his pistol to his holster when the gun discharged. The bullet entered his upper right thigh, exited his thigh and entered his right calf, finally lodging above his right ankle.

Moore, taken by ambulance to Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo, was reported in stable condition Wednesday night.

The accident occurred about 2:05 p.m. as Moore was trying to pass his bimonthly gun qualifications, using his duty-issued 9-millimeter pistol.

Moore joined the Sheriff’s Department in July 1994 and transferred from detention services to Thousand Oaks patrol services in January.
