Det. Kathy Shatz has been named Simi Valley’s 1996 Police Officer of the Year and will be honored May 6 by the City Council.

Shatz was selected by the Police Department for her dedication and professionalism, Lt. Anthony Harper said.

“She is a hard worker and worked her way up into a position in detectives that people aspire to,” Harper said. “She is detailed, conscientious and dedicated to her job and very worthy of the award. I’m sure my assessment of her is not different from [that of] any other officer here. She is an excellent candidate.”

A woman has not been selected officer of the year since 1977, when Patricia Hopkins--who later retired as a sergeant--was awarded the departmental honor.

Shatz joined the department in 1988 after graduating from the Fresno State Center Peace Officers Academy. After working as a patrol officer and traffic officer, she was assigned to the detective unit as a child abuse/sex crimes investigator in 1992 and has been a homicide investigator since 1993.
