Salinas Reportedly Living in Ireland
Former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, in self-imposed exile for more than a year, surfaced Wednesday in New York City and confirmed that he is living in Ireland, a newspaper here reported Thursday.
At an annual meeting of Dow Jones stockholders, a reporter from the daily Reforma intercepted Salinas and asked him to clarify where he lives.
“I live in Ireland with my family,” Salinas was quoted as saying.
Salinas is a member of the Dow Jones board of directors.
Revered during his presidency, Salinas has been reviled in Mexico since he left office in December 1994. Many blame him for corruption and for the economic crisis that erupted last year.
