Annual Forum on Pollution Prevention Opens at UCLA

Share

The UCLA Pollution Prevention Education and Research Center is offering its third pollution prevention forum, an annual series of lectures by environmentalists and business people.

The forum, which will continue daily through June 3, covers topics ranging from rice straw’s use for paper production to the use of recycled and nontoxic products in construction. Schedules can be obtained from the center.

The presentation scheduled for June 3 will be led by a senior environmental analyst from clothing manufacturer GAP who will discuss measures taken in the apparel industry to prevent pollution.

Among other efforts GAP has made to help the environment, the company is exploring the use of fabrics that can be “wet-cleaned” through a water process rather than dry-cleaned, which requires chemicals, said Robert Gottlieb, director of the center.

Discussions at last year’s pollution prevention forum led to the creation of a pilot project in Los Angeles to test wet cleaning, Gottlieb said. The project is underway at Cleaner by Nature, a wet cleaner that operates a store in Santa Monica and a cleaning plant near La Cienega.
