Amid hoots and howls, an estimated 10,000 people turned out at Baylor University as the Southern Baptist institution ended a ban on dancing that dates back to the school’s founding in 1845.

Baylor President Robert Sloan Jr., wearing a tuxedo, and his wife, Sue, wearing a sequined gown, swayed to Beethoven’s “Minuet in G” and then jitterbugged to Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood.” Bands also performed country, rock ‘n’ roll, and rhythm and blues.

Pelvic gyrations were prohibited and “dirty dancing” was an absolute no-no. “This is awesome,” said 18-year-old Amber Barsness. “We need some gyrating music, though.”
