KKBT Says It’s Focusing On Tolerance

Share

I read with some regret and frustration an article from Guy Aoki of Media Action Network for Asian Americans that was printed in Counterpunch (“Despite Its Slogan, KKBT Crossed Line in Mocking Asians,” April 15).

Aoki continues to miss the point of the many years of work the staff of “The Beat” has performed to improve race relations and break down the barriers among the diverse cultures in Los Angeles.

“The Beat,” more than any other media outlet, has devoted hours of programming with the major thrust focusing on the message of tolerance and positivity.

We listened to Aoki and his organization with respect. We accepted his criticism and adjusted our use of humor that is intended to enlighten rather than stereotype. We aired a lengthy editorial they wrote so that they could clarify their position. Subsequent meetings and a joint press release focused on our agreement to work together in a positive way.

It is terribly frustrating for the staff at “The Beat” and our very large audience to hear him characterize a positive message such as “No Color Lines’ as hypocrisy. What truly is hypocritical is Aoki and his organization’s inability to reach a mutually acceptable agreement and live with it.
