Judge Refuses to Dismiss Case Against Ex-Compton Official

Share

A federal judge Monday refused to drop extortion and tax-evasion charges against former Compton City Councilwoman Patricia Moore.

U.S. District Judge Consuelo Marshall offered little explanation as she denied motions by Moore’s attorneys that the case be dismissed because of alleged outrageous and vindictive conduct by prosecutors, among other reasons. Her attorneys claimed that the outrageous conduct included harassment and threats against Moore.

The attorneys said they will set their sights on a hearing scheduled May 2 in which they will ask that the case be dismissed because of selective prosecution.

Since her 25-count indictment in August by a federal grand jury, Moore has maintained that she was unfairly targeted in the sting that also snared former Rep. Walter R. Tucker III, who was sentenced last week to 27 months in prison.

Moore also wants the original prosecutors in the case to be replaced so that she can call them as witnesses. She claims they denied her legal representation during a yearlong period in 1993 and 1994.
