HOME REBOUND: After a five-year slump, home construction is making a comeback in the Valley area, or at least along its edges in communities like Calabasas and Valencia (D1). . . . Says developer James Rasmussen, who sold 19 of 20 homes in a new Agoura cul-de-sac: “That tells you how good the market is.”

ECO-CONSCIOUS: Monday was Earth Day (A16), and if you go by city statistics, West Valley residents may be among the most environmentally conscious in the city. About 49% recycle, which puts them at or near the top, with Westsiders. . . . “We’re constantly sending out details on how to cut your green-bin waste down,” says Diana Brueggemann, who covers environmental issues for Councilwoman Laura Chick.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?: Devotees of William Shakespeare know that today is the Bard’s 332nd birthday. Just ask George K. George Shakespeare’s family has traced its genealogy to within two generations of the Bard, but beyond that, it’s guesswork. “I could possibly come from the brother of the poet,” he supposes.

SIGN UP: Residents incensed by a huge traffic sign erected in their Chatsworth neighborhood have asked Mayor Richard Riordan to help bring it down. The sign, spanning three lanes of Winnetka Avenue, directs northbound traffic near the exclusive Monteria Estates gated community. . . . “If you intentionally wanted to depreciate a neighborhood, this would be a good sign to start with,” said a letter to Riordan signed by 15 homeowners.
