Sheriff’s investigators arrested a Los Angeles man on suspicion of shooting a San Clemente entrepreneur who owed the suspect’s business partner more than $70,000, authorities said Wednesday.

Two weeks ago, James Wengert was in the parking lot of his financial research firm when a man demanded his wallet at gunpoint, sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson said. Wengert gave the assailant his wallet and then was shot in the face.

“The bullet went through his jaw,” Wilkerson said, but Wengert recovered from his injury.

An investigation led detectives to Paul Alleyne, 29. Investigators said Wengert had owed $70,000 to Alleyne’s business partner, Coleman Allen, who recently died after a heart attack.

Wengert identified Alleyne as the shooter in a photo lineup and deputies arrested the 29-year-old at his Los Angeles business on Tuesday, Wilkerson said. Fifteen marijuana plants were found in the office, he said.

Alleyne was booked on suspicion of attempted murder at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $250,000.
