Asian American journalists will be joined by community, political and business leaders for discussions of Asian American public issues today at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The daylong event, celebrating the Asian American Journalists Assn.’s 15th year, will begin at 1 p.m. with forums ranging from social justice to political empowerment. A town hall meeting follows at 3 p.m.

The “Asian Pacific Americans in the Next Millennium” culminates with a dinner during which veteran journalist Bill Wong will discuss challenges facing Asian Americans in the nation’s newsrooms and society. Wong, a longtime Oakland Tribune columnist, was dismissed from his job last month.

On Saturday, the Korean American Journalists Assn. will hold a symposium titled “Lessons Learned from the 1992 Siege of Koreatown” to mark the fourth anniversary of the riots.

The conference, to be conducted in English and Korean, will feature riot victims, panel discussions on the portrayal of Korean Americans in the media and the reading of essays on the civil unrest.

The event will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Korean Cultural Center, 5505 Wilshire Blvd., and will be followed by a dinner. Radio Korea will broadcast the event.
