An unknown number of people were killed when a Russian passenger train derailed in breakaway Chechnya on Friday after an explosion on the track, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted an armed forces source as saying.

Tass said Russian servicemen were among those killed in the incident, which happened close to the station in the town of Argun, six miles east of the regional capital, Grozny.

Doctors and rescue workers went to the scene of the derailment, which happened about 3 p.m., the agency said. The engine and 10 cars of the train, which was on its way from Argun to the town of Mozdok in North Ossetia, left the rails.
