MACY’S ARRIVES: Shoppers at The Oaks mall...

MACY’S ARRIVES: Shoppers at The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks will see none of the hoopla planned for today in Los Angeles; they will simply see new signs: Broadway and Bullock’s have become Macy’s. . . . But it will take slightly longer than anticipated to make the switch at Buenaventura Mall in Ventura. That Broadway is now scheduled to convert May 31, said company spokeswoman Betty Krogh. And it won’t have full Macy’s merchandise until mid-July.

WHOZZAT? Part of the reason Bob Fulkerson joined the movement to set up a citizens council in Somis (B1) is the long-distance way the little hamlet is represented on the Board of Supervisors. . . . Supervisor Maggie Kildee lives next door in Camarillo, but Somis is no longer in her district. Instead, Simi Valley resident Judy Mikels gets the honor. . . . And while that means Somis has the ear of two supervisors--Kildee being almost family--Fulkerson hardly ever sees Mikels. “She’s not a person anybody in Somis knows,” he said.

BABY BOOMLET: Myia Perry, 5, seems to enjoy her time at Roots and Wings day care in Thousand Oaks, which is getting a loan from the city so several low-income children can join the fun (B1). . . . More and more parents in Thousand Oaks need help with their kids. And according to the 1990 census, that city--family reputation aside--isn’t even among the most kid-heavy in the county. Less than a quarter of its population is 17 or under. . . . Nearby Moorpark leads the pack; more than a third of its residents are children. Fillmore follows closely. . . . Ol’ Ventura is only 23.5% juvenile--the lowest in the county.

WORK FOR MONEY: Even as the Ventura City Council tonight faces the budgetary consequences of a feeble economy, it will plan for brighter times. Its Economic Development Work Program lays out a course for drumming up commerce, through everything from streamlining permits to working with other cities (even Oxnard?). . . . Economic development manager David Kleitsch says the blueprint is essential: “What do you do when you do nothing? You stagnate.”
