A workshop on dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease will be held May 9 at the Ventura Townehouse in Ventura.

Naomi Feil, an educator, trainer and author, will lead the all-day workshop about understanding and communicating with people suffering from dementia associated with Alzheimer’s.

Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Assn. of Ventura County and the Camarillo Health Care District, the workshop deals with Feil’s “validation therapy,” which involves accepting that a person with dementia returns to the past, as well as learning skills to communicate with Alzheimer’s patients.

The goals of the workshop, which targets family members, caregivers and health-care professionals, include learning the physical, social and personality traits that lead to change in old age; developing awareness of the aging process; learning to recognize the different stages of confusion and disorientation; learning how to help people suffering from dementia, and helping caregivers to avoid burnout.

The cost of the workshop, including lunch, is $50 for the general public and $15 for Camarillo residents. Continuing education credit is available for an additional $10.

Seating is limited to the first 200 people who register.

The program will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 4900 Telegraph Road in Ventura.
