Workshop to Consider Area Retail Projects

Development of the old General Motors automobile assembly plant and changes in the area of Panorama Mall and Panorama Towne Center top the agenda for Wednesday’s public workshop sponsored by the Los Angeles City Planning Department.

The goal of the workshop is to update the department’s community plan for Mission Hills, Panorama City and North Hills, said city planning assistant Kevin Jones.

The vacated General Motors plant on Van Nuys Boulevard will probably soon be redeveloped as retail shops, theaters and restaurants, with a portion of the 100-acre property retained for light industrial uses. The project presents new traffic and public safety issues, Jones said.

In addition, Wal-Mart, which is considering building its first Los Angeles store in the Panorama City area, is reportedly eyeing the former Broadway store site in Panorama Mall. Combined with the recently completed Panorama Towne Center shopping complex adjacent to Panorama Mall, Jones said that area is becoming very active. “We would be concerned about design guidelines, making sure the signage is more attractive.”

Another issue, whether construction of more apartment buildings should be permitted in the already densely populated area between the San Diego Freeway and the Pacoima wash (north of Roscoe Boulevard and south of Nordhoff Street), will also be discussed, Jones said.

The city’s 35 community plans comprise the land-use element of the city’s General Plan. Community plans establish where different kinds of land uses are located, including residential, commercial and industrial areas.

Wednesday’s public workshop will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mid-Valley Regional Library, 16244 Nordhoff St.
