From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A ferocious forest fire swept over 800-year-old Anasazi Indian archeological sites and moved to within one mile of Los Alamos nuclear research facilities in New Mexico, officials said. Emergency teams rushed to dig trenches and rip up vegetation around facilities containing high explosives and small amounts of radioactive material. Officials said there was a 50% chance the fire would reach the facilities but there was no danger of a serious leak. Two men have been arrested for starting the blaze, the worst fire in the area for almost 20 years.
