La Habra’s mayor, school district superintendent and police chief are among 130 amateur chefs who will create their favorite dishes at Sunday’s fourth annual Gourmet Guys Raise Bread for Kids contest.

The public event is a fund-raiser for the Children’s Museum at La Habra, which hopes to clear about $30,000 for its exhibits as well as outreach and educational programs.

Marcia Giesler, the museum’s development consultant, said the chefs will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in 11 categories, including salads, soups, desserts, meat and seafood entrees.

La Habra City School District Supt. Richard Hermann, Police Chief Steven H. Staveley and Fire Chief Mike McGroarty will prepare “Kahlua Surprise” pie, “Savory Seafood Roll Ups” seafood, and “Marmee’s Choice” cheesecake, respectively, she said.

Other cooks will make zanier dishes such as “Vulture Bars” cookies, “If Geese Gave Godiva” chocolate pate, “Frank’s Bait and Tackle” seafood pasta, “Cosmic Herbal Manna” bread, “I Wish I Was Back Home in Texas” chili, “Olympic Torch” chili, “Appalachian Annie’s Curried Veggie Burger” and “Der Fire Mouth” cheesecake.

A panel of professional chefs will be judges. Entertainment will include a mariachi band, a cooking demonstration by radio and TV cook George Geary and table-decorating demonstrations.

The cook-off will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at La Habra Community Center, 101 W. La Habra Blvd. Admission is $35 a person or $17.50 a person for groups of 20 or more. Ticket holders may sample all the dishes prepared by the chefs.
