Digital Equipment Unveils Line of Mid-Priced Servers: The move by Digital Equipment Corp. is a bid to capture market share from competitors such as Hewlett-Packard Co. The new Alpha Server 4100 machines run on Digital’s Alpha chip, considered the world’s most powerful. A server is a machine that acts as a host for a network of personal computers or workstations, storing and distributing files and controlling access to other machines, such as printers. Server sales are accelerating as more people use the Internet. Servers are also used by companies that manage large databases. The Alpha Server 4100 will carry an introductory price of about $44,500, compared with $300,000 for its top-of-the-line Alpha 8400, the Maynard, Mass.-based company said.
