* Laurence Fred Young; Professor Emeritus at Cal State Northridge

Laurence Fred “Lou” Young, a retired Cal State Northridge professor, died Thursday at his Santa Paula home after a brief illness. He was 81.

Young, who was born March 11, 1915, in Minneapolis, resided in Ventura County for 18 years.

He retired as professor emeritus from CSUN in 1978, where he had been director of teacher training in the department of physical education. Young graduated from the University of Denver in 1939 and later received a doctorate in education from USC.

He worked in the physical education department at the University of Denver for 10 years before going to CSUN in 1958.

He served in the Navy in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific during World War II and was later a lieutenant commander in the Navy reserves.

Young was a member of the Fleet Reserve Organization, the Saticoy Country Club and numerous educational organizations. He was also an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Paula.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ethel; his brother, Dick Young of Denver, and his sister, Anna Lou Schmidt of Denver.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Paula.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Santa Clara Valley, the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Paula or the Center for Achievement of the Physically Disabled at CSUN.
