Cal State Northridge students and alumni seeking careers as teachers are invited Thursday to the university’s Education Expo, an annual job recruitment fair where hundreds of prospective candidates have found work in previous years.

The free event will begin at 10 a.m. in the University Student Union’s Northridge Center. Only CSUN students and alumni will be admitted with identification, said organizer Rory Barksdale. Participants are also urged to bring resumes, letters of reference, evaluations and their California Basic Educational Test scores.

For the first hour, participants may visit recruiters, including many school principals, from 52 school districts mostly located in California. From noon to 4 p.m., recruiters will conduct 15 to 20 interviews with eligible applicants.

At last year’s expo, approximately 300 visitors participated in 618 on-site interviews. According to Barksdale, at least 150 were later hired.

To prepare for the expo, Barksdale urges potential participants to visit CSUN’s Career Center this week to view videotapes on interviewing and ways to successfully navigate a job fair.

“You need to ask yourself why you want to be a teacher,” she said. “Why do I want to teach, and where?”

The campus is at 18111 Nordhoff St. Parking is available for a nominal fee in Lot C at Zelzah Avenue and Plummer Street.
