Federal Funds, Art for Pond on Agenda
The City Council is scheduled to consider a plan for allocating an estimated $6.4 million in federal funds for community development, housing and emergency shelter when it meets today.
The proposed budget for the 1996-97 fiscal year includes $600,000 to help build the Downtown Community Center and $200,000 to support anti-gang efforts by the Police Department.
Nonprofit agencies, including the Boys and Girls Club of Anaheim, the Anaheim YMCA, the Anaheim Museum and the Orange County Council on Aging, would also receive funds under the budget plan.
The council will also vote on paying a team of artists to create an interactive, mixed-media work, “Musical Gateway,” to be installed at the Pond.
The proposed agreement calls for the city to pay $100,000 to composer Steven Stucky and visual artists Nancy Mooslin and Sandra Rowe for their collaborative effort.
The artwork would consist of four long, colorful sculptures that incorporate fiber-optic lighting triggered by the playing of a four-part musical composition.
According to a statement by the artists, the goal is to “create a high-impact, fun, spirited, friendly welcome” for visitors at the arena, which is home to the Mighty Ducks hockey team and other events.
If the council approves the contract, the artwork is expected to be finished in time for the opening of the Mighty Ducks season this fall.
The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
