Teen Gets 60 Days in Jail for Harassment

A high school senior spurned by a former boyfriend was sentenced Wednesday to 60 days in jail for harassing the boy and his family.

Carolyn E. Grill, 18, of Simi Valley had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of vandalism and making an annoying telephone call. Moorpark High School senior Richard Hart, 18, said Grill began harassing him with numerous telephone calls at home and work after he broke off their brief dating relationship.

Grill was originally arrested in March after Hart complained to authorities about the harassment.

But almost immediately after her release from jail and while awaiting trial on the original charges, investigators said, Grill kept up her campaign of harassment by throwing eggs at Hart’s car and using a key to carve an obscenity into Hart’s mother’s car.

After a monthlong investigation, Grill was arrested April 15 on felony charges of harassing a witness. She has been in jail ever since, and will miss her graduation at Royal High School because of her incarceration, her mother said.

“She planned on graduating with her class and going to Moorpark College,” said Margaret Coslett, the girl’s mother. Coslett said the sentence was too harsh and blamed Hart for some of the problems.

“My daughter made mistakes, no doubt about it,” Coslett said. “But she’s a kid. They’re both kids.”

Coslett said Grill plans to attend adult continuation school to earn her high school degree when she gets out of jail.
