Ceremony to Honor 300 Trained in CPR

Share

More than 300 parents who mastered CPR techniques and earthquake-preparation skills in classes sponsored by Mission College this year will be honored today in a campus ceremony.

The event will also serve as the farewell for the program that has provided CPR training for three years to parents with students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Mission College officials said they will no longer receive enough grant money to fund the program. The college had received about $10,000 a year as part of a crisis-prevention project from the state Department of Education to run the training sessions. The program ran from October to May each year with free weeklong classes.

“It’s been great because people now have the opportunity that they know how to save a life,” said Tony Alcala, who helped organize the program that operated in Valley elementary schools. “I just hope to see that the college will come up with another way to find the money,” he said.

Officials at Mission College could not be reached for comment.
