WATER CONSERVATION

Share

Looking to save a precious commodity, Long Beach on Saturday is giving away toilets that use only about 1 1/2 gallons of water per flush instead of the seven or eight gallons used in older models.

“Every gallon of water saved is a gallon of water that we don’t have to import from the Colorado River or Northern California,” said Robert Cole, executive director of the Long Beach Water Department, co-sponsor of the giveaway with the Metropolitan Water District.

The ultra-low flush commodes, now mandated for newly built homes, will be distributed free to city residents from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Polytechnic High School, 1600 Atlantic Ave.

Recipients must live in a single-family residence and show a copy of their most recent water bill and present photo identification. The new toilet must be installed and the old one returned by June 1.
