Council Expected to OK Traffic Light
The Simi Valley City Council is expected to approve Monday night a contract to install a traffic signal at a dangerous intersection where a police cruiser slammed into a nurse’s car in 1994 and sent her into an eight-month coma.
The council made the decision to install a traffic light at the driveway of the Metrolink station on Los Angeles Avenue in April, two years to the month from when Margaret Sphar, 46, was injured in the accident.
Sphar came out of the coma last year, but according to her lawyer she remains severely disabled.
She was driving out of the parking lot at the Metrolink station in eastern Simi Valley when her Honda was struck by the police vehicle. On impact she was thrown from the car. She eventually sued the city for negligence and won a $2-million settlement in February.
Installation of the traffic light is expected to cost about $220,000.
