Putting a Lid on Trash Problems

* The best solution to Ventura County’s trash problems is the expansion of an existing solid waste disposal asset--the Toland Road Landfill. For western and central communities, Toland offers accessible, affordable service with more than 30 years of capacity. For the east county communities, Toland provides a long-term, locally controlled backup to the Simi Landfill. For the market in general, Toland assures competition, which ultimately works to the benefit of all residents countywide.

The Ventura Regional Sanitation District has invested $1.3 million and considerable expertise in the preparation of a thorough environment impact report. The analysis concludes that Toland is the environmentally superior of more than 31 disposal site alternatives studied.

I am pleased that the Thousand Oaks City Council unanimously agreed that the Toland expansion will result in less regional environmental impact than other disposal options. I urge the county Board of Supervisors’ concurrence with the city’s conclusion that “a locally controlled, in-county facility is the most reliable way to assure continued environmentally safe and cost-effective disposal for all of Ventura County.”
