Council to Meet on Hiring City Manager

The City Council has called a special closed session at 6 tonight to finalize last-minute details in a contract for Los Alamitos’ new city manager.

“I’m optimistic that when we get out of that closed session, we’ll sign up the deal,” Mayor Robert P. Wahlstrom said.

The council had hoped to settle contract negotiations for the $90,000-a-year position during its regular closed session at Monday’s council meeting but ran out of time, Wahlstrom said.

The council has been searching for a new city manager since December, when Bob Dunek announced he was leaving to take a similar post in the city of Lake Forest.

Dunek, who served the city for six years, left Los Alamitos in mid-January.

Though the names of the applicants have not been released, Wahlstrom said the council is focusing on one candidate.

If the council reaches agreement on the contract tonight, Wahlstrom said, the new city manager will be named Thursday at the earliest.

“We’ve first got to give the applicant the chance to respond one way or the other,” he said.
