McClatchy President Takes on Added Job of CEO: Gary Pruitt, president of McClatchy Newspapers Inc. since May 1995, has been appointed to chief executive, said Erwin Potts, McClatchy’s CEO for the last seven years. Potts, 64, will remain as chairman. Pruitt, 38, joined McClatchy in 1984 as corporate counsel and became general counsel in 1987, helping to take the company public in 1988. After stints as assistant to the president of the Sacramento Bee and publisher of the Fresno Bee, he became vice president of operations and technology in 1994. Sacramento-based McClatchy publishes 28 daily and weekly newspapers in California and other states and owns other media-related businesses.
