Film: Sony Corp. has teamed with renowned author and illustrator of children’s books Maurice Sendak in deals with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Retail Entertainment and Sony Signatures. Sony said the working partnership covers Sendak’s existing and new intellectual properties, including books, characters and his national children’s theater, Night Kitchen. The company said Sendak, along with John Carls, his partner in Wild Things Productions, will work with TriStar Pictures to develop and produce full-length feature films based on Sendak’s own books and books by other artists.
Marketing: Burger King Corp. could sign an agreement with DreamWorks SKG as early as Monday that would allow it to offer promotions based on the movie studio’s films, said people familiar with the negotiations. The tie-ins would begin with “The Lost World,” the sequel to “Jurassic Park,” to be released in mid-1997, and include animated films and video releases through the end of the decade.
Television: While not looking to take on new debt, Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone on Thursday held out the possibility that he will exercise his option to buy half of the UPN network. Having teamed up with Chris Craft Industries to develop the broadcast network, Viacom has the option to buy a 50% stake in UPN through the end of the year.
