A 37-year-old Van Nuys man has been convicted for the second time in six months of beating his estranged wife, officials said.

Sergio Escoto was sentenced Wednesday by Van Nuys Municipal Court Commissioner Mitchell Block to serve 240 days in jail for beating his wife of 20 years.

After pleading no contest to spousal battery, Escoto was immediately taken into custody and began serving his sentence.

Authorities charged Escoto after a Valentine’s Day beating of his estranged 34-year-old wife. Friends say Escoto was attending a party at a friend’s home when he saw his wife.

The couple got into a heated argument during which Escoto attacked her, Deputy City Atty. Howard Fuchs said.

Escoto reportedly struck the woman repeatedly with his fists, including punches to the stomach, Fuchs said, adding that Escoto had been drinking right before the attack.

After the February incident, Escoto’s estranged wife was taken to North Hollywood Medical Center by a friend.

Angered by the beating, the friend reported the abuse to police, Fuchs said.
