HUD Grants for City Total $849,000

Just when Simi Valley was getting used to a shortage of federal funds, the U.S. government dumped nearly $850,000 into the city’s lap.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in April had promised the city only $382,000 in Community Development Block Grants, which bolster Simi Valley’s public and private infrastructure and social programs. That was a sharp drop from the $802,200 received the year before.

But the city announced Friday that the grants will total $849,000 and encouraged past recipients--especially those with anti-gang programs--to apply.

Said General Services Director Steve Elam: “I think the real focus is on gang intervention,” particularly after a recent report urged community-wide action against gangs. “We’re just trying to get the word out to the nonprofits in this area.”

Nonprofit agencies and other grant seekers must apply for the block grant money by 5 p.m. June 17 at Simi Valley City Hall.

The City Council will hold a public hearing July 22 before determining how it will dole out the money.

Organizations that have already submitted applications for the earlier grants need not apply again because the city will be reconsidering their requests, Elam said.
