The military wing of the Islamic Hamas group vowed Saturday to avenge the shooting by Israeli troops of a top Hamas militant.

“The Qassam brigades will not hesitate to carry out the strongest revenge against the coward Zionists for this ugly crime,” said a leaflet issued by the group.

Israeli soldiers on Friday shot and seized Hassan Salameh in Hebron, a flash point for violence and the only West Bank city where Jews live among Palestinians.

Salameh is suspected of planning three of the four suicide bombings in Israel in February and March that killed more than 60 people, including two Americans.

“The criminal incident . . . will not have any impact on the ability of the military wing of the movement,” the leaflet said.

Hamas opposes the Palestine Liberation Organization’s 1993 peace deal with Israel.
