‘Bingo King’

* The Times’ May 9 article about the “Bingo King’s” philanthropic activities in Israel and the United States prompts the following questions: What do the authors of this article wish to tell us? That Irving Moskowitz is a threat and an obstacle to Mideast peace? That building yeshivas and buying parcels of land in Jerusalem and its environs are acts of “aggression” against the Arabs, and are, therefore, the Jewish equivalent of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the U.S.? That a few observant Jews, motivated by their religious convictions, have a greater impact than whole organizations or communities of assimilated, secular, liberal and far wealthier Jews in the United States?
And finally, should we call for an extensive government investigation, or would a “limited, surgical” pogrom be sufficient to root out this cancer of rich, religious Jews from our midst?

* I find Moskowitz’s statement that it’s the “natural thing for a Jew,” trying to “save our nation” (nation being Israel) very offensive. He was born in Manhattan, so the next time he says “our nation” I hope he is referring to the U.S., not a foreign country.
