Four-Star Films : ‘She Wore a Yellow Ribbon’
Based upon stories by James Warner Bellah, all three films of John Ford’s fabled Cavalry Trilogy--”Fort Apache” (1948), “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” (1949) and “Rio Grande” (1950)--are masterful, enduring achievements, classic westerns filmed in Ford’s beloved Monument Valley. They have superbly staged battle sequences, an endearing swatch of rowdy Irish humor and sentimentality, and eloquently express Ford’s enduring concern with gallant behavior and human dignity. As splendid as John Wayne is in these films, the elegiac “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” provides him with one of his finest roles. Like any Ford film, this one boasts a stellar supporting cast, including Joanne Dru and John Agar (pictured) (TNT Sunday at 3 p.m.).
