Although an overwhelming majority of Americans support equal rights for homosexuals in jobs and housing, nearly 6 in 10 are opposed to legally sanctioned gay marriages, according to a Newsweek poll.

In an indication of the issue’s political resonance, 45% of registered voters say they are less likely to support a candidate who favors gay rights, including marriage. Twenty-four percent are more likely to support such a candidate, and a fourth say it doesn’t matter.

In the poll, 84% said they support equal rights for gays in employment and 80% in housing. But 58% oppose gay marriages.
