SOUTH OF HEAVEN: Welcome to High School...
SOUTH OF HEAVEN: Welcome to High School at the End of the Twentieth Century by Thomas French (Pocket Books: $12; 368 pp.). A reporter for the St. Petersburg Times, French spent a year at a central Florida school tracking several groups of students. Many of the behaviors he reports--friction between under- and over-achievers, social divisions, hostility toward administrators--have long been a part of high school. More alarming are “the apathy, the withering of curiosity, the almost palpable frustration and anger” French sees. His clear reportage gives these widely reported trends a personal immediacy.
