Earning by Degrees: Your mother told you to “get an education,” and now there is ample evidence she was right. Studies show that college degree holders earn far more than high school graduates, and that salary gap is steadily getting wider. Currently, the most popular degrees at CSUN are in business and management disciplines. Valley Briefing, B2

Fallen Heroes: Former Army paratrooper Raul J. Mena Jr. and others are pushing to honor Glendale veterans and are raising money for a Glendale-Montrose-Crescenta Valley Veterans Memorial expected to cost about $166,000. The city pledged to pay half, but the drive is still $21,000 short. . . . “We’re looking for our dedication day to be Memorial Day of 1997,” Mena said. They’re also looking for donations.

For the Books: Taking a cue from the fast-food industry, the CSUN bookstore last week offered drive-through service to buy back old textbooks. In a faculty parking lot, the drive-through service accounted for about 30% of the bookstore’s total buyback this semester. . . . “It was exactly like going to get a hamburger,” manager Bill Lloyd said. Longest wait: 12 minutes.

Matadors Stay Alive: The Cal State Northridge baseball team took two more giant steps Saturday in their quest to gain a spot in the College World Series. The CSUN Matadors needed to beat Mississippi State and Stanford in back-to-back games, and they did, by one point each. (C1) Now all they have to do is beat Florida State twice today.
