Judith L. Sweeney, president of The Times Orange County edition since 1993, has resigned effective July 1.

Sweeney, 40, said she is leaving to “spend more time with my family” and to pursue other career goals.

A successor to Sweeney will be named, said Laura Morgan, Times director of communications.

Sweeney has been responsible for the business and marketing operations of the Orange County edition, which is published in Costa Mesa. She is also a vice president of the Los Angeles Times.

Jeffrey S. Klein, The Times’ senior vice president for consumer marketing, said Sweeney “has done a superb job of strengthening our competitive position in Orange County.”

The paper, said Klein, “remains strongly committed to the Orange County market” and to improving its competitive position in the area.

Sweeney was a management consultant with McKinsey & Co. in Los Angeles from 1986 to 1992. During much of that period, The Times was a client, she said. She worked with the Orange County edition in the early 1990s to develop its current format.

Calling her decision to resign “very difficult,” the Newport Beach resident said she hopes to either start her own business consulting firm or to “run a small- to medium-size independent company in Orange County.”
