Japanese Cult Leader Says He Tried Suicide

TOKYO —
Japanese cult leader Shoko Asahara, charged with the deadly Tokyo subway gas attack in 1995, said Tuesday that he has made two suicide attempts while in police custody and would rather die than see his sect banned.
“Even if I destroy my life and my body and die, I ask that efforts to apply the Subversive Activities Prevention Law be halted,” Asahara told a panel seeking to outlaw his Aum Supreme Truth sect.
