A: More tornadoes occurred in 1973 than any other year, according to “The Handy Science Answer Book.” That year, 1,102 tornadoes struck in 46 states, killing 87 people. From 1980 to 1989, an average of 820 tornadoes struck each year. The largest single outbreak occurred on April 3 and 4, 1974, when 127 were recorded.
