Samsung to Cut Chip Production by 15%: The South Korean company said it will cut its monthly semiconductor production in an apparent move to slow a decline in global prices. Analysts said Samsung’s action may stop the price decline and could reverse the trend. Samsung Electronics Co. is the world’s largest producer of memory chips, which are widely used in personal computers. Other major chip makers said they are pressing ahead with plans to increase production of dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, chips. Samsung said it will slash monthly production of 16-megabit DRAMs to 12 million units next month from a planned 14 million units. The 16-megabit chips account for 60% of Samsung’s chip production.
