From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee dropped out of the U.S. Senate race to serve out the 2 1/2 years left in disgraced Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker’s term. “This is no time for the captain to jump ship for another boat,” said Huckabee, who will become governor automatically upon Tucker’s resignation. His decision could jeopardize what GOP leaders say is their best chance for their first U.S. Senate seat in Arkansas since Reconstruction. Tucker, whose term expires in January 1999, was convicted of conspiracy and fraud.
