An apparent altercation between an off-duty sheriff’s deputy and a Los Angeles man on Friday ended when the deputy shot the civilian in the hands, police said.

Santiago Sanchez, 21, was listed in satisfactory condition in the jail ward of Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, hospital officials said. Sanchez was arrested on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to Sgt. Kirk Wilder of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Division, Sanchez and another man confronted the off-duty deputy about 4 p.m. Friday at Tampa Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard. Their argument escalated and the deputy fired one shot, striking Sanchez, Wilder said.
