‘The Gate of Heavenly Peace’

The title of Richard Gordon and Carma Hinton’s superb documentary on the Tiananmen Square Massacre is a translation of the word “Tiananmen.” It refers to to the entrance to Beijing’s ancient Imperial City where, in the spring of 1989, students began to gather until a pro-democracy protest movement grew ever larger and more militant. The film incorporates interviews with many protest leaders, most now in exile, and amazing archival footage of the massacre (KCET Tuesday at 9 p.m.).
