Dropout Rate Shows Slight Improvement in L.A. Schools

Dropout rates in the Los Angeles Unified School District dipped slightly, from 10.9% in the 1993-94 school year to 10.7% in 1994-95, according to a report by the State Department of Education.

The report reviewed dropout rates for students in grades 9 to 12 and included magnet schools, which generally have fewer dropouts than traditional high schools.

L.A. Unified’s dropout rate was far greater than the county’s 6.5% rate for 1994-95 or the state rate of 4.4% for the same year. According to the report, almost 17,000 of the 167,733 students in grades 9 to 12 in Los Angeles Unified dropped out during the 1994-95 school year.

School board president Mark Slavkin said he was pleased with the slight improvement, but said schools should be reviewed individually to determine what they are doing to keep students from dropping out.
