Wall Sculpture Honors Contributors

A wall sculptured by a Laguna Niguel artist honoring individuals and companies that donated funds and services to build a new women’s shelter in Irvine has been unveiled at the Edwards Cinemas complex at the Irvine Spectrum entertainment center.

The 40-bed shelter is run by Human Options, a 14-year-old nonprofit organization that provides shelters for the female victims of domestic abuse and their children. It is the largest shelter of its kind in Orange County.

The 12-month fund-raising campaign was headed by Richard Sim, group president of investment properties for Irvine Co.; and Charles A. Haggerty, chairman of Western Digital.

More than 300 companies, community groups, foundations and individuals donated to the $3.5-million shelter.

HomeAid, founded in 1989 by the Building Industry Assn., raised about $1 million in donations of materials, labor and consulting services for construction of the 13,000-square-foot shelter.

Both HomeAid and Human Options raised $300,000 for the shelter and the Irvine Co. donated $100,000 and the land, valued at about $800,000. Western Digital donated $50,000, and the architectural firm of KTGY Group gave $70,000 in services.
